Fed Cuts Borrowing Costs for Second Time This Calendar Year Amid Financial Instability

The US monetary authority reduced interest rates on Wednesday, marking the second reduction in the current year during economic turbulence stemming from the government closure and trade duties.

Decision Arrives at Extraordinary Moment for Federal Reserve

The decision to cut the key rate by a quarter point to a span of 3.75% to 4% comes at an unprecedented juncture for the Fed. The authority has been under significant strain to lower borrowing costs despite persistent inflation.

Central Bank Announcement Notes Job Market Shifts

In a statement, the Federal Reserve said that the jobless rate had increased but remains low. “Job gains have decelerated,” the statement reads. “Price increases has risen and remains somewhat elevated.”

Federal Closure Hinders Fed’s Job

The continuing federal government shutdown, now among the lengthiest in American history, has also complicated the central bank’s task. Gathering of important financial statistics has been indefinitely halted as staff at the BLS are furloughed during the closure.

Data Gap Impacts Policy Decisions

The Fed typically studies labor statistics to assess labor market conditions, such as the number of new jobs added to the economy and the current jobless percentage. The most recent employment data was published in the beginning of last month, prior to the shutdown, and provided a relatively bleak snapshot of the employment scene in August.

The figure of jobs created to the economy in the summer month was lower by over 100k since the earlier season, and unemployment rose to 4.3% – the peak since 2021.

Alternative Reports Show Continued Slowdown

Though the bureau was scheduled to release September’s employment data in the start of last month, it suspended its release once the shutdown began. Private payroll firm ADP reported recently that the business segment cut thirty-two thousand positions in last month, a indication that the job market is still decelerating.

“Supply as well as demand for workers has declined significantly,” Fed chair the Fed chairman stated earlier this month, a trend he had earlier said comes from immigration and tariff policies.

Inflation Report Shows Moderate Increase

Though BLS’s employment data has been paused, the bureau still issued its price statistics for last month that showed that costs are rising, albeit gradually. Prices rose 3% over the last year, the peak since the start of the year. In April, the annual inflation rate was 2.3%, the minimum it has been since 2021. The central bank’s goal inflation rate is 2%.
