Tetris Didn't Win at The Game Awards — A New Category May Address This Issue

Whenever a prominent awards ceremony approaches, there’s always a clamor to include of new categories to honor unsung work and satisfy the passions of followers who have specialized interests.

Another commentator has already made supporting a scary games classification. That would rule. Equally deserving are board games, representing a dedicated supporter's campaign. Yet I need to apologize in advance for pushing forward because like all blinkered fanatics, I possess a compelling case for why my demand stands as crucial and important of all. Here's the proposal: We need a classification for brain-teasing titles.

The Genre Classification Challenge

Organizing artistic expressions isn't exact; it’s very subjective, and it will always spark debates and end in fuzzy definitions. There’s a reason film award organizations avoid this approach. Yet it remains an unavoidable compromise in the world of interactive entertainment, showing incredible range it's challenging to consider them a single creative category.

To recognize the complete range of gaming accomplishments to be recognized, and to ensure all game types to compete fairly, specific award classifications remain vital.

Existing Game Classification System

The major gaming awards currently feature genre categories for Action, Adventure-action titles, Role-Playing, Combat games, Simulation and strategy titles, plus athletic and racing experiences. Between them, these award types actually cover many game types, making space possible accommodating various experiences.

This doesn't apply to brain-teasing titles. There’s simply nowhere to accommodate them. Examine these examples from recent excellent titles, showing diverse approaches: building puzzles from a specific release, fast-paced pattern recognition in a different title, thought-provoking social scenarios from additional release. Which classification works within current classifications? Simply put, no category fits.

Recognition Challenges

There are dozens of brilliant puzzle games published annually that have no home in entertainment awards, if they accidentally match award groups including Mobile Game, VR/AR Game, or the extremely competitive Indie races.

  • An iconic brain-teaser got overlooked in any category in 2014
  • A different innovative game was excluded that year
  • A beloved organization game was overlooked that year
  • Just some puzzle games scraped into niche award types

Importance of Logic Titles

Frequently they represent modest productions, yet the craft behind logic titles carries substantial weight. Iconic mobile puzzle games stand as the most-played games worldwide maintaining this status for over a decade.

The legendary block-stacking game challenges famous sandbox experiences competing to become highest-selling title ever; it also contends for top gaming experience. Logic titles represent cornerstones to the art of video games, and engaging with diverse game types.

Proposal and Rationale

Logic titles wouldn't face this problem. You could fill a field of five with fascinating, diverse, deserving games annually without trouble — perhaps, with difficulty, given the need to exclude many worthy titles.

To emphasize again, these include experiences that otherwise have no home in important events. Logic title developers function at the hard edge interactive creation, developing some of most fundamental forms within interactive entertainment. Comparable to cinema stunt performers, they deserve recognition. We shouldn't delay 35 years.
